Foreign students could be barred from entering Britain unless they secure a place at a top university as part of Rishi Sunak’s plans to curb record levels of immigration.
All foreign students will also face new restrictions on bringing family members after the number of dependents nearly tripled in a year.
The prime minister said “all options” were on the table after it emerged that total immigration in the year to June had reached an estimated 1.1 million. About 560,000 people emigrated, bringing net migration to a record 504,000, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
That’s triple the 173,000 net migration in the previous 12 months, and higher than the pre-Brexit record of 336,000 in the year to March 2015.
