United Airlines flight to Sao Paulo makes emergency landing after sparks erupt from plane

A United Airlines plane had to make an emergency landing when a shower of sparks broke out and debris fell to the ground shortly after takeoff.

The major US airline’s flight UAL149 was en route to Sao Paulo International Airport when the incident occurred.

It continued its climb before entering a holding pattern over the Atlantic, dumping fuel over the ocean to reduce weight, before returning to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) where it made a safe landing.

Footage of the terrifying incident was captured on video and shared on Twitter.

It showed sparks reportedly flying out of the plane due to a problem with the hydraulics.

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation to confirm the cause of the outage.

In a statement, United Airlines explained that the plane, which was carrying 256 passengers, experienced a mechanical problem shortly after takeoff and had been left in the air to burn fuel before landing safely.

“Passengers got off at the gate and a new plane is scheduled for this morning,” it said on Thursday.

It comes after an American Airlines plane bound for London was diverted to Bermuda in August after flight crews discovered the smell of smoke.

A week later, another US 777-300 also en route to London was diverted when the crew noticed fumes in the cabin.

It made a precautionary landing in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
