Apple’s iPhone 14 range
As we saw with the 13th generation iPhone, the iPhone 14 is a range of four handsets, not one. The iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max all launch on Friday, September 16, with pre-orders starting today, September 9.
The base iPhone 14 and extra-large iPhone 14 start at £849 and £949 respectively, while prices for the premium iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max handsets start at £1,099 and £1,199.
Apple has made both minor tweaks and major upgrades for the next generation of iPhones. Here are some of the notable features.
iPhone 14 Pro Max screen
The iPhone Pro Max 14 has a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display and a camera notch that now changes size depending on the apps you’re using. For example, the notch shows notification text and media controls.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max’s display is also now ‘always on’, meaning it will show basic information like the time and some notifications in standby mode.
iPhone 14 Pro Max battery
Apple says the new iPhone Pro Max’s battery lasts for 23 hours of video playback and charges up to 50% in half an hour with a 20W adapter.
A16 Bionic processor
Debuting with the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the A16 Bionic processor, consisting of a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU with 50% more memory bandwidth than the A15 Bionic chip of previous iPhones.
iPhone 14 Pro Max camera
Apple has finally caught up with its contemporaries by significantly increasing the pixel count of the iPhone’s main camera. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 48 megapixel (MP) main lens with a quad-pixel sensor for much more detailed photography.
iPhone 14 Pro: everything else
The iPhone 14 Pro Max avoids the SIM tray slot on the sides of all previous iPhones. Instead, the new handset will use a virtual ‘eSIM’ card, allowing users to have multiple phone numbers and data plans on the same device.
The Pro Max will also use satellites to help people at risk reach emergency services if they have no signal.
Finally, Apple has made the new iPhone more customizable with different fonts and color schemes to choose from as part of the new iOS16 operating system.
