Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker called on two state senators, also Democrats, to resign Thursday amid bribery and domestic violence allegations.

Democratic State Sens. Emil Jones III and Michael Hastings resigned from their party leadership positions earlier this week following the allegations, but Prtizker says that doesn’t go far enough. Jones is charged with bribery, while Hastings is charged with violent domestic violence by his estranged wife.

“Senator Jones is accused of taking bribes. And Senator Hastings is accused of abusing women. They should answer the charges and have their day in court. But for the sake of their constituents, these men should resign from their office,” Pritzker said. said in a statement Thursday.

“Just relinquishing their leadership roles is not what the public should expect. I want to send a clear message to the people of Illinois: There is no room for corruption and abuse here,” he added.

Jones and Hastings each deny the charges against them. Two other women have accused Hastings of misconduct in recent years. An environmental lobbyist says Hastings “bullied” her during the negotiations, and his former chief of staff charged him last year with discrimination based on race and gender, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Pritzker’s move comes days after he was charged with hypocrisy from a Republican mayor after state officials sent 90 migrants to Elk Grove Village with little notice.

Elk Grove Village mayor Craig Johnson says Pritzker’s office warned the town about the incoming migrants just hours before arriving at a hotel. Johnson complained and demanded to know whether the migrants had undergone background checks or health checks. Pritzker’s office declined to answer and later issued a statement suggesting the city was xenophobic.

“The state has a previous relationship with the hotel used in the suburbs, and their staff has done a great job of welcoming refugees and asylum seekers earlier, so it’s interesting that local officials choose this particular case to complain to the press about this particular group of asylum seekers made up of about 30 families Gov. Pritzker has made it clear that Illinois is [a] hospitable state, and xenophobia has no home here,” said Pritzker’s press secretary, Jordan Abudayyeh.

Johnson has since demanded an apology from the governor’s office.

“We don’t play those little games. But to insult us, that we’re either racist or that we’re indifferent, that’s insulting,” Johnson said. “The governor owes our community an apology, and I’m waiting to hear it.”
