The Cubs are on a roll! They haven’t had particularly good lineups, but man, Cubs throwing has been fantastic lately. Beating bad teams is just the beginning, right?
Hayden Wesneski may have been a little less precise with his throws tonight than he was last weekend against the Rockies, but you could see the bad stuff again. That slider is just brutal.
The big moment, of course, was the 5th inning, when Wesneski went strike, strike, strike, strike, strike, strike, strike, strike, strike to score three strikeouts. That’s an impeccable inning, and it was the Cubs’ first in nearly 20 years.
Brandon Hughes was a little wild in his short appearance, so again I say, maybe it’s time to think about winding him down for the year. It’s a LOT of innings right now.
Mark Leiter Jr. was solid in another multi-innings appearance to close the case. The Pirates were able to get the tying run to third base in the bottom of the ninth (HBP, wild pitch, stolen base), but Rodolfo Castro lined out to midfield to end it.Read:Browns RB Nick Chubb believes his late TD ‘cost us the game’ in last-minute loss to Jets
Christopher Morel doubled in two early runs, Michael Hermosillo drove in another as part of his two-hit night, and David Bote kept warm. It wasn’t much, but it was just enough.Read:Georgia Tech slips in CBS Sports’ Bottom 25 after firing Geoff Collins
